A large early English silver flat top lidded tankard in sterling silver with a scroll handle having a decorative thumb piece and applied strap work. Good patina. Lovely plain design and hand beaten silver. Uninscribed. Engraved to the bottom are the owners initials in old cursive script. Contains 3 pints. Weight 1246 grams, 40 troy ounces. Height 20.5 cms (to top of thumb piece). Diameter 14.5 (top), 14.25 cms (base). Fully marked on lid and base, handle unmarked. London 1673. Maker’s mark WM crowned - see Jacksons page 127.
This rare antique silver tankard is in very good condition with no damage or apparent restoration. Good patina. The lid and body have matching silver marks which are easy to read. The handle is unmarked and has a small dent on top of the handle where the thumb piece has been touching for 350 years.
