Charles John Holmes was born in Preston in 1868 and was educated at Eton School and then Brasenose College, Oxford. On leaving Oxford he joined a publishing company and started to exhibit his paintings. Charles Ricketts, RA was one of his early influences and during the 1890s he studied etching under William Strang, RA, RE. He was a prolific exhibitor, mainly at the Royal Watercolour Society and the New English Art Club, but he also exhibited at the Royal Academy and Royal Scottish Academy to name but a few. He held several solo shows at the Fine Art Society and the Carfax, Colnaghi and Grosvenor Galleries. He was elected to membership of the New English Art Club and the Royal Watercolour Society and was Vice President of the latter for a time. In addition to his painting, he was Editor of the Burlington Magazine (1903-09), Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford (1904-10), Director of the National Portrait Gallery (1909-16) and Director of the National Gallery (1916-28). He was knighted in 1921 and died in London in 1936.

This work is a watercolour which has been retained in its Fine Art Society framing, which is a simple strip moulding and a wash-lined single mount. Overall, including framing, it measures 19.25(h) by 21.75(h) inches. If a purchaser requires this item to be sent through the post then the framing will need to be opened up and the glass removed before posting.
Not examined out of the frame but appears to be in good condition. However, it is unlikely that the framing will be to conservation quality.
The work bears a Fine Art Society label to the reverse dated August 1953 and it is possible that this painting was included in a mixed exhibition of that year such as "Paintings and Watercolours by British Artists" held in December.
Height 9.25 inch (23.49 cm)
Width 12.75 inch (32.38 cm)
External Height 19.75 inch (50.16 cm)
External Width 21.75 inch (55.24 cm)
Not signed but a Fine Art Society label to the reverse provides details. The artist exhibited many works of Scotland and the Northern Counties during the 1920s/30s and this work probably dates to that time.
