The artist Charles Patten (born 1804) as a child standing three quarter length holding a hoop and stick
Charles was the son of William the miniature painter and his wife Mary. His brothers, George and William Patten Junior were also artist's. The inscription on the reverse was written by the sitter's son Adolphus Purcell Patten (1828-1909)

The artist of this portrait was the father of an artistic dynasty which included sons George Patten, A.R.A, Charles and William plus grandsons Alfred Fowler Patten and William Vandyke Patten, all of whom exhibited from 24 Ludgate Hill, London. There are six portraits by William in the National Portrait Gallery including Sir Edward Banks, Robert Waithman, Lord Mayor London and poet Mary Maria Colling.
