Charles Shirreff 1798
Charles Shirreff 1798
A fine portrait miniature of an officer wearing a scarlet coatee with white facings and collar, white chemise with frilled cravat and single gold fringed epaulette. He ha brown eyes and his hair is worn loosely tied back. Watercolour in oval gold frame with pearl surround and plaited hair to reverse.

Additional Information: The reverse of the ivory is inscribed: C Shirreff pinxt/1998/Fort St George/Madras The sitter is known to have been painted at Fort St George in 1798 so the sitter is probably an officer of the East India Company's Madras Army. The 'wing' visible on the sitter's left shoulder clearly marks him as a flank company officer, probably attached to the grenadier company of his regiment. His exact regiment cannot be identified but he would have been an officer of grenadiers of one of the East India Company's Madras Native Infantry regiments.
