Charles Shirreff Commander James Oswald in gold-edged blue uniform in gilt-metal frame with translucent blue glass reverse on a foil ground

Robert Bayne Powell, Sotheby's 11 October, 1994 James was promoted Lieutenant on 28 August 1795, Commander on 3 January 1798 and Post Captain on 3 September 1799. He commanded Spider against Ramillies on 4 April 1796 and Perseus in 1799 as part of Nelson's command to the Bay of Naples. From 1802 he commanded Acasta patrolling off Ushant, wathcing the french fleet in harbouar at Brest. As a commander Oswald captured several prizes. First on 24 May 1803 he captured the Batavian ship Berbice. Then on 28th May Acasta captured the french brig Margaretta, which had been carrying brandy, wine and the like from Sete to Antwerp.
