Marianne Preindlsberger was born in southern Austria and went on to study in Munich under Lindenschmidt. Whilst there she met Elizabeth Forbes who was also studying there and they formed a lasting friendship.
There are many parallels between the careers of these two painters.
Marianne became a painter of genre, biblical subjects and portraits and exhibited her work from 1883 at the Royal Academy; Society of British Artists; Grosvenor Gallery and the New Gallery and elsewhere.
Considered one of the leading women artists in Britain of her time.
Marianne’s talent was recognized early on and won her prize money that enabled her to travel.
She went to France, where she sought the right place for ‘plein air’ painting and was attracted to the thriving colony at Pont Aven, Brittany in 1883.
It was there that she first met Adrian Stokes who she married the following year.
In 1886 the couple came to Cornwall where they both became leading figures in the St. Ives Artists’ colony.
Adrian became the first president of the St. Ives Art Club and both he and Marianne exhibited at the Seminal White Chapel exhibition of 1902.
In the 1890’s Marianne changed her style completely and begun working in a Medievalist style often using tempera colours.
In 1899 Adrian and Marianne moved from Cornwall to London and travelled widely in Europe.
Marianne died in London in 1927.
