A rudimentary form of clock, a Dragon fire clock features a dragon whose body supports a horizontal lit taper or incense stick, which slowly burns. As it does so, it burns through the cords suspending the metal balls, which fall two-by-two into the tray, the sound marking the passage of time.

The lighted taper or incense stick burns gradually and ignites the cords so that the metal balls fall onto the brass dish, sounding the passage of time.

This wooden dragon probably dates from the early 19th Century, the base is of a later date.

The wooden base has ebonised gilt-edged surfaces, suspending a removable lead-lined base for the balls to fall into. The curved stand above supports the
black lacquered and gilt painted carved wood dragon with a hollowed back lined with a lead tray and with shaped metals supports for the taper.
