Chinese Early 18th Century moulded blue and white tea bowl and saucer, made during the reign of the Emperor Kangxi at the kilns at Jingdezhen for export to Europe.
Excellent detail in the decoration to show cockerels, birds, peonies, lilies and chrysanthemums and to the centre of the tea bowl a pair of swimming mandarin ducks in a lily pond.
Cockerels were much revered in chinese folk lore with the rooster as one of the zodiac signs. it also represents courage and faithfulness and will protect a home from fire. Pairs of Mandarin ducks in a lily pond represent a long happy marriage.
The base shows a yue or jade mark inside a double circle
The bowl and saucer are lightly fluted with foliate rims
