This Linen Press conforms to the line drawing in ‘Cabinet Maker’s Director-Chippendale’ (see plate CXXIX)). The dimensions match almost exactly. Our Linen Press being just 1” taller. We presume this is due to the more ornate top moulding/cornice. The configuration of our press has an extra drawer in the base and less trays to the top section. The construction of the feet are braced by sandwich blocking to the inside corners which is typically used by Chippendale. The backs are panelled, top and bottom. The drawers and trays are oak lined (one tray has a repair to one lining). The drawers all have steel locks with ‘S’ shaped escutcheons which is a feature, almost exclusively, used by Chippendale. All the deal surfaces have a red wash, again typical of the maker. The top door retains its original ‘S’ shaped key. The whole piece retains the original oil polishing. The door astragal mouldings with incised corners are a distinctive feature of the Linen Press supplied to Mersham (plate 242) and Paxton (plate 245) as shown in ‘The Life & Work of Thomas Chippendale’ by Christopher Gilbert.
