Christ carrying the cross on the way to Calvary

second half of the 17th century
oil on canvas
cm. 116 x 86
with frame 128 x 98

The painting, representing the way of Jesus Christ on Mount Calvary, is a characteristic work of the Flemish circle Simon de Vos, an important painter of the school of Antwerp in the 17th century, influenced by Pieter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck , as evidently showing his paintings of sacred subjects.

The canvas in question shows Christ, who fell on the road to Calvary and turns to Santa Veronica, who dries with a dirty, damp cloth. On the other side, the Virgin Mary and Saint Mary Magdalene attend the scene.

The representation has a deep sense of devotion, with a dramatic and theatrical baroque structure, played skillfully on the alternation decided light and shadow.

A great study of the author has been given to the restitution of the physiognomical details of the characters; Remarkable is the ability of the painter to effectively perform emotions and faces, with almost portrait results.

The canvas is in a good state of preservation.

The painting, like all our object is sold with a certificate of authenticity with photographic documentation.

The canvas is accompanied by a beautiful golden frame, not antique.
