Beautifully made spoon, the reverse of the bowl and top of the stem engraved with cartouches of strapwork and floral ornament on matted ground. The Taler with the profile of Maximilian III Joseph, Elector of Bavaria (1727-1777) and inscription D.G.MAX.IOS.U.B.&P.S.D.C.P.R.S.R.I.A.&EL.L.L., the reverse with the Virgin and Child and inscription PATRONA BAVARIAE 1755, richly tooled case in fine original condition

Friedrich Bierfreund was a highly regarded Nürnberg maker; examples of his work are in several public collections and museums, amongst them two sets of cutlery in their case in Stuttgart, Landesmuseum Württemberg (s. Karin Tebbe e.a., Nürnberger Goldschmiedekunst 1541-1868, Nuremberg 2007, vol. I, no. 64, p. 56f)
