Raised on a naturalistically cast rectangular base, stamped FRATIN

Born in Metz Fratin was the son of a taxidermist. His understanding of the anatomy of animals probably came from his time helping his father in his taxidermy business. Fratin studied under Pioche in Metz and then moved to Paris where he studied under the painter and sculptor Gericault. Fratin exhibited widely at the Paris Salon and at the Great Exhibition in London.
