Oil on oak panel
Gortzius Geldorp was a Flemish Renaissance painter. He studied painting fron C. 1570 in Antwerp with Frans Francken the elder of Herenthals and later under Frans Pourbus the Elder. In 1579 he joined the entourage of Carlo d'Aragona, the Duke of Terra Nova and travelled to Cologne where he settled and became a successful portrait painter to the aristocracy. There are around seventy known works by him which are mostly painted on panel, including a series of nine family portraits which can now be seen in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. More of his work can also be seen at the Accademia in Turin and The Hermitage in St Petersburg, with many works remaining in Museums in Cologne.
