Sir James Thornhill (Dorset 1675 - 1734) was an English painter of primarily historical subjects but who also painted some portraits throughout his career. He trained under his relative Joseph Highmore and decorated palace interiors with large scale compositions, including The Great Hall at the Royal Naval Hospital in Greenwich. In 1718 George I made Thornhill 'History painter in Ordinary to the King' and in 1720 Serjeant Painter shortly before knighting him.

Jonathan Richardson the Elder (London 1667 - 1745)was an English portrait painter, writer on art theory and collector of Old Master drawings and was a friend and associate of Thornhills. He trained under John Riley and was the master of the artists Thomas Hudson and George Knapton.
