Mary Beale was an English portrait painter who became one of the most important painters of the 17th century, being described as the first professional female English painter. She was a prolific painter of the English middle classes and clergy and later in her career her style became heavily influenced by her friend Peter Lely who also allowed her the exclusive right of making copies of his work.
Rundells Antiques, Essex where the work was identified as by Mary Beale by the National Portrait Gallery, London in April 1965 and dated to 1670.
