Circle of Mary Beale (Suffolk 1633 - 1699 London) Portrait of a young man, wearing a blue doublet style jacket with slashed sleeves, a white shirt beneath, draped in a gold coloured cloak set within an oval stone cartouche. Circa 1670.

Mary Beale was an English portrait painter who became one of the most important painters of the 17th century, being described as the first professional female English painter. She was a prolific painter of the English middle classes and clergy and later in her career her style became heavily influenced by her friend Peter Lely who also allowed her the exclusive right of making copies of his work.
