Eduard Hildebrandt studied in Berlin and Paris. In the 1840s he began to travel, and in 1864-5 he completed a journey around the world. This scene was published with the title ‘Runde Strasse in Peking’ as a chromolithograph in 1871-4 in a series entitled Reise um die Erde. The composition appeared again in the Illustrated London News of 10 March 1866 under the title of ‘Circular Street, Pekin’.
