The subject is taken from ' The Discophoros ' created by the classical Greek sculptor Polyclitus in 460 B.C. The original bronze statue is now lost but a few marble replicas survive. Examples of these can be found in the Louvre and British Museum.

William Edward Frost studied at Sass's drawing school, on the advice of William Etty, the British Museum and the Royal Academy Schools. He was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1845,the Royal Academy in 1870 and he retired in 1876. He started his career as a portrait painter but his paintings of nymphs became so popular he gave up portraiture. His subjects are usually taken from Milton,Spenser and the Ancients.

Examples of his work can be found at the Ashmolean and Fitzwilliam Museums.
