Károly Markó, the Elder was born on 25 September 1791 in Leutschau (Levoca), Slovakia is one of the most well-known figures of nineteenth century Hungarian painting. He began his career when it was very hard to make a living as an artist in Hungary.
He studied in Budapest, Vienna, Rome, Pisa and Florence. He spent 10 years in Vienna painting miniatures and sketches for landscapes. He was a member of the Academies in Florence, Vienna and Venice.
In 1830 he painted Visegrad his most important work.
He left for Italy in 1832 and other than a few visits back to Hungary; he spent the rest of his life there.
Despite his absence, Marko kept pace with Hungarian art life, sending his pictures to the exhibitions of the Pest Art Association, which were held regularly from 1840 onwards.
He kept open house for any Hungarian artist who happened to be travelling in Italy.
The Hungarian Press followed his work with interest and even in his life time was celebrated as the “Hungarian Claude Lorrain”
Italy was known for an earthly paradise by artists in the first half of the nineteenth century.
It was incredibly fashionable to visit Florence and Rome as well as travelling the whole peninsula along the classic routes, painting the unique scenery set in majestic sunny landscapes.
Among the different genres it was landscape painting that became primarily dominant in this special artistic sphere. The stories of heathen and Christian mythology depicted in partly idealized, therefore imaginary landscapes based on the seventeenth century heritage of Claude Lorrain, created a unique style whose most prominent representative was Károly Markó, the Elder.
These landscapes, including the scenes they contain, come to life through his pantheistic approach.

Works Represented: Budapest; Florence; Genoa; Graz; Leipzig; Moscow; Nich and Vienna.
