Edward Wilkins Waite was a landscape painter who was born at Leatherhead, Surrey, the son of the Reverend Edward Waite. He came from an artistic family - his grandfather William Watkin Waite was a miniaturist, his father an amateur watercolourist and three of his brothers also became artists. Waite was educated at Mansion House Grammar School, Leatherhead. In 1874, he went to Ontario, Canada where he worked as a lumberjack whilst sketching views of the landscapes.
After his return, he took up painting seriously and in 1878 exhibited two paintings at the Royal Academy. He exhibited at the RA again in 1880 and then almost every year after until 1919. He became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1893 and exhibited 30 works in over twenty separate places including the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Suffolk Street, New Gallery, London, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. He died at Fittleworth, Sussex in 1924.
Examples of his works can be found in many museums and art galleries including the Bolton Museum, Bristol Art Gallery, Croydon Museum and Preston Art Galleries.
The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
