Collioure, France is a highly unusual work by female Impressionist painter Hilda Clements Hassel. This watercolour painting depicts the beautiful town of Collioure from an elevated position, looking over the rooftops and onto the sea. The buildings are depicted in an almost childlike manner, with simplified forms and dark outlines. This use of outline, called ‘Cloisonnism,’ was fashionable amongst the Modern artists of the early 20th Century, and is thought to have been started by Van Gogh, who took the idea from Japanese art.
