English Oak Corbel circa 1400, depicting a "Fool" lampooning a King, as shown by his holding an orb in one hand and wearing a lopsided crown together with a smirking, foolish grin. He is dressed in doublet and hose with very pointed feet. The piece is constructed from two pieces of wood and was fixed to conceal the interface of the wall plate and the springing of the vaulting, ie it had no structural function. The execution of the facial features is consistent with those of late Medieval roof elements from the Home Counties.
There has been a loss to its nose, and there are two small repairs to the castellation.
A corbel depicting an Angel with similar "smirking" expression is illustrated in Tracey, "Medieval Furniture and Woodwork" pages 46/47, Catalogue 45, Plate 15.
Height 35.00 cm (13.78 inches)
