Pair of English Oak carved Corbels, possibly from East Anglia, circa 1420 – 1450. They are presented with one depicting an Angel holding a shield, and the other has an Angel holding a scroll representing “The Word”. They are rare examples as they have been carved in the round, indicating that they were not structural, but were pendant style fittings. The tops have been sawn flush, but they would have originally have had tenons to fix them to the woodwork of the building structure. They would appear to have been situated in a sheltered exterior position, and were probably either side of an entrance to an ecclesiastical or public building.
