Opening the coromandel jewellery box reveals a blue velvet and gold tooled interior with a removable silk lined jewellery tray with a large storage space underneath.
The jewellery box tray features seven velvet padded compartments including two for rings, earrings or cufflinks.

The underside of the antique jewellery box lid houses a removable ruched velvet backed mirror which when removed reveals a leather letter compartment.

To access the secret letter reversible mirror compartment:

The lock keep on the lid at the top edge of the box has three screws, place your thumb underneath the middle screw under the front edge of the box, you will feel a indentation squeeze this and the mirror will spring forward, this can be removed to allow access to the letter compartment and the mirror can be turned if preferred.

On the back edge of the open box is a brass button. pressing this will cause the hidden drawer at the front of the box to spring open. The jewellery drawer matches the interior of the box with blue padded velvet and features a space for a pocket watch. On the front edge of this drawer is a makers label which reads: Farthing & Thornhill. Makers. 42 Cornhill

This jewellery box comes with a fully working lock and tasselled key.

Calamander or Coromandel is a valuable wood found in India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It has a contrasting hazel-brown colour with black grain. It is a dense, heavy wood that is so popular it has been logged to extinction over the last few hundred years.

This makes Coromandel pieces even more special.
