Donald McIntyre was born in Yorkshire but spent most his childhood in northwest Scotland. His early experiences of the Scottish landscape are clearly visible in his works. The approach of the Scottish Colourists and their followers Cadell and Redpath, is evident in his mix of vibrant and cooler colours. The coastal scenes of Scotland and Wales that crop up throughout McIntyre’s work display his wonderfully balanced use of colour and expression.

Although McIntyre had been a great draughtsman in his youth he had trained as a dentist. Whilst he studied at the Glasgow Dental Hospital, he attended evening art classes at the Glasgow School of Art. Following this he served in the army and later became an Education Health Ofiicer. It was at the age of forty that McIntyre decided to pursue painting as a full time career, under the persuasion of the Howard Roberts Gallery in Cardiff.

Where McIntyre spent many of his formative years on the North West coast of Garelochead, a group of artists influenced by the teaching of James Wright RSW lived near and McIntyre joined them. It was under Wright’s guidance that McIntyre developed his strong palette, firmly rooted in the Scottish Colourist tradition.

McIntyre lived in North Wales, but spent many of his summers in Iona, in the tradition of the Scottish Colorists before him. He would often make landscape studies in situ – finishing larger works in his studio. Painting mostly in acrylic McIntyre could capture in a wonderful range of vibrant colours the light and atmosphere of his subjects.

Donald McIntyre’s work is widely collected, and his paintings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Society of Marine Artists and his works are in the permanent collections of H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh, USA Embassy (London) and The Welsh Arts Council. He was a member of the Pastel Society, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Royal Cambrian Academy.
