Countess Macartney was the 3rd daughter and 5th child of Prime Minister John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute and his wife Mary nee Wortley Montague, making her a grandchild of the writer and traveller Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. She married 1768, 1st Earl Macartney, Ambassador to Russia and Chief Secretary of Ireland 1775-1779.
An identical enamel of Countess Jane, formerly in the Collection of C.H. Samuelson, sold at Christie's in February, 1960 as by John Smart, is now in the National Gallery of Ireland where it is described as After John Smart
