PROSPECT OF AN ENGLISH COUNTRY HOUSE
ATTRIBUTED TO GEORGE CUITT THE YOUNGER
1779 - 1854
Oil on canvas 26 ¼ x 36 inches
Framed size 32 x 41 inches
The only son of George Cuitt the Elder was born in Richmond, Yorkshire.
His father was a successful painter of “prospect” Country House views and landscapes.
He had studied in Rome in the 1770 where he found the recording of buildings in their landscape settings to be his forte.
George the Younger was initially instructed in art by his father from a very early age, but soon added the art of etching to his talents, which was to put him in a fortunate position later in life.
He moved to Chester around 1809 where he became a teacher and drawings master.
It was then that he published his first etchings of romantic and antique subjects. These proved to be a great success and he became the most celebrated etcher of his age. So much so, that by 1820 he was able to ‘retire’ from full time working and built himself a fine House in Masham, Yorkshire.
He still continued to paint and more often etch, but at a pace that suited him.
His publications were in great demand and by the time he died in 1854 he was still a man of property.
Few of his paintings are known today because he is primarily thought of as an etcher.
For comparison, there is an interesting work in the Lancaster Maritime Museum, which is a View of the Vale of Lonsdale.
This house would appear to have been built circa 1825-30 and with the relatively immature planting it is likely to have been painted shortly after it was built.
