LYNN CHADWICK (1914-2003)
‘Couple, 1957’
Chinese Ink - signed & dated '57 - 33x25cms

Lynn Chadwick was born in London in 1914. He attended the Merchant Taylors' School, & after taking his School Certificate stayed on to study drawing, watercolour and oil painting. He was then sent to Vouvray to study French.
From 1933-1939 he worked as an architectural draughtsman in London before volunteering for the Fleet Air Arm (1941-44). After the war he produced textile, furniture & architectural designs, and his first mobile sculpture constructed from aluminium & balsa wood was shown at a Building Trades Exhibition in 1947.
He began to make sculpture, having first exhibition with Gimpel Fils in London in 1950. In 1953 he was one of the twelve semifinalists for the Unknown Political Prisoner International Sculpture Competition, in which he was awarded an honourable mention and prize. By 1956 his reputation as a sculptor was confirmed internationally when he won the International Prize for Sculpture at the XXVIII Venice Biennale in 1956. More prizes and accolades followed as his career developed, including being awarded the CBE in 1964.
His approach to sculpture is based in construction rather than modeling. Chadwick first makes a linear armature or skeleton on to which he applies a skin, building up the surface to a solid form. Earlier works featured a textured finish, but his latest pieces have a smoother, more refined surface, and geometry has replaced more organic form. His subject-matter ranges from the human form, abstracted but readily recognized, to animals - general types rather than specific creatures. Chadwick has created a permanent exhibition of his work at his Gloucestershire home, Lypiatt Park, close to Pangolin Editions, the foundry that casts most of his work.

Lynn Chadwick was born in London on 24 November 1914. He attended Merchant Taylors School, and from 1933 to 1939 he worked as an architectural draughtsman in various London practices. During World War Two he served in the Fleet Air Arm, and his experience of speed, flight and movement were to influence his future work. After the war he returned to his work as an architectural draughtsman, but began to experiment with suspended mobiles. This led to his work being exhibited in London, and to commissions for the 1951 Festival of Britain. His desire to further his technical skills led to his taking a course in oxygen welding, the results of which enabled him to extend his artistic language. In 1953 he entered the international competition for a memorial to The Unknown Political Prisoner. Although he did not win, he was awarded an Honourable Mention and a cash prize. During the 1950s his reputation grew when his sculptures were awarded major international prizes at Venice, Padua and Lugano, and were shown at the Venice Biennale. At the end of the decade he bought Lypiatt Park in Gloucestershire, where he established a sculpture park in which to display his work. As his fame grew, he received commissions for work in Europe, America and throughout the world. He was made a CBE in 1964, and an officer of the Ordre des Lettres in 1985.
Lyyn Chadwick died in 2003.
