Item Description / Dealer Expertise

In 1896, Pierre Louÿs published his first novel, Aphrodite — mœurs antiques, an erotic depiction of courtesan life in Alexandria. It is considered a mixture of both literary excess and refinement. It sold 350,000 copies and was the best selling work by any living French author of the era. Raphael Collin, the author's friend, illustrated the Paris 1909 edition, published by Librairie des Amateurs, A. Ferroud, Paris.

Born 1850

Raphael Collin studied in Saint-Louis and Verdun. He went to Paris where he studied in the atelier of Bouguereau and then joined his friend Lepage at Cabanel’s atelier where they both worked alongside Cormon, Morot and Benjamin Constant. Collin painted still-lives, nudes, portraits and genre pieces. He liked to paint his subjects en plein air with a clear and luminous palette. Collin also enjoyed collecting various ceramics, including ancient terracotta and Japanese items. He made his Salon debut in 1873 with a painting entitled Sommeil. In 1889 and 1894 he was awarded medals for his work and was also made an officier of the Legion d’honneur. In 1909 Collin was made a member of the Institut.
