D377. A finely engraved gorge cased carriage clock, circa 1865, which is signed in full on both the dial and to the bottom of the backplate by Aubert & Klaftenberger, Geneva, and is typical of their clocks; however, they were probably the retailers. The clocks they sold were always made to a particularly high standard and it is thought that they were often supplied to them by Henri Jacot.

The movement strikes and repeats the hours on a bell and is provided with an alarm. A sign of the quality of the clock is that the platform of the lever escapement is gilded as opposed to the usual silvering. The whole of the case is covered in particularly fine engraving.

Height with/without handle 6.2"/4.9" (15.5/12.8cm)

Aubert and Klaftenburger. This partnership was created when in 1835 when GF Aubert was based in Geneva and CJ Klaftenberger in London. From around 1845 they were commissioned by Queen Victoria to supply watches as gifts and were commended for their contribution to the 1851 exhibition. They were granted the Royal Warrant in 1859.
