This distinctive Daghestan prayer rug belongs to a group of early nineteenth-century Caucasian rugs that draw rows of alternating colorful ‘ashik’ and palmette forms interspersed with diamonds and abstracted vegetal ornament against a golden ground. Rich in both color and texture, a solitary tree grows in the mihrab niche of a type more commonly seen in the borders of classical Safavid era medallion carpets from neighboring Northwest Persia. A series of colorful triangular devices are painted against the white main border flanked by smaller guard borders of multicolored diagonal stripes. The piece is dated 1253 corresponding to the Western date 1837. Silk Foundation.
