Marius Jean Antonin Mercié was born on 30 October, 1845 in Toulouse. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Alexandre Falguiere and Francois Jouffroy and in 1868 won the Grand Priz de Rome. The prize enabled him to study in Italy and from there he produced his first most popular success ‘David Vainquer’. It was exhibited at the Paris Salon, receiving wide public acclaim and winning him a first class medal. The lifesize original is now at the Musée d'Orsay. He achieved great success during his lifetime, becoming president of the French Artists Society in 1913 and attaining the rank of Grand Officer in the Légion d’Honneur. Mercié died in Paris in 1916. |
