Blanc de chine porcelains were made at Tehua, in the province of Fukien. Guanyin figures were recorded in the collection of Queen Mary II in 1697. For a longtime the figures had been accorded occidental style, being described as Woman with Child or Madonna with Child.

The Guanyin was properly the Chinese Goddess of Mercy. Guanshiyin relates to the Observation of the Sounds of the World and accords with a tenet of Buddhism.

The Guanyin offered resonates with that per ^Godden p 263 plate 188 and as such dates to the Kangxi period and these appear to have served the domestic market, where they would both decorate a shrine as well as act as a joss-stick or spill holder, as well as for the export market, where they appear on many ships' manifests. The form of the figure has similar aspects to that displayed in *Duesseldorf in 2009
Two finger ends on the child missing, lower right leg missing, bocage to the left of the figure truncated.
