Denys Calvaert, said Dionisio Fiammingo (Antwerp 1540 - Bologna 1619), attr.
Holy Family with St. John the Baptist and St. Elizabeth

second half of the sixteenth century
oil on panel

(Cm) 66 x 57

The splendid table, depicting the Holy Family with the infant St. John the Baptist and Elizabeth, for stylistic and compositional reasons should be assigned to Denijs Calvaert (Antwerp, 1540 - Bologna, 1619), known as the "Flemish", painter of the late period mannerist, who began his training in Antwerp, but that, once arrived in Bologna, was perfected by embracing the Italian manner.

In the painting, can be placed in the last decades of the sixteenth century, they read transition elements between the Mannerist style, formal and stylized, yet Flemish ancestry, and the most streamlined near the lively cultural atmosphere created in Bologna at the end of the century.

The composition, simple and quiet, is dominated by a group of compact shapes. At the center depicting the Madonna, surrounded by a soft light, intent on supporting the Child. On their side the little John the Baptist. Behind the Virgin are represented St. Elizabeth and Joseph to his right, with intent and thoughtful attitude, almost foreign to domestic tranquility that emerges from the painting.

Similar versions of the painting are known, in particular the Holy Family with St. John the Baptist preserved in the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire in Geneva (Switzerland). The work reveals an identical setting and placement of the figures, and a number of similarities with the features of the faces of Mary and Elizabeth.

The table, in excellent condition, is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
