Joseph Webb A.R.E. born 1908 died 1962 was a” visionary” artist and endowed many of his creations with an imaginative and mystic quality. To quote from an article in “La Revue Moderne” on Joseph Webb’s work – “ A curious dualism in this artist shows first the poet, sensitive to scenes of nature, of romantic landscapes, then the seeker in the mystic, in love with everything relating to the intercourse of being with the unknown forces of the world”.He trained at the Chiswick School of Art from 1922-23. From there he went to Hospitalfield Academy, Arbroath, where he worked for 4 yrs, exploring the medium of etching and developing his acute observation. He was recognised by the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and elected an Associate Member in 1930. Exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy at Aberdeen, Liverpool, Chicago, New York and Paris. At the Salon he was awarded a medal. Examples of his work have been acquired by the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Museum of Wales, and the University of Wales.
