This sculpture alludes once again to Gerald’s love of the classical past and the romantic present. The Diana Fountain, shown with her attribute of the crescent moon worn above her brow, stands in a traversing ballet step, seen by Gerald in a ballet choreographed by the legendary Merce Cunningham. These revolutionary steps were born out of a great period of innovation in dance in America in the 1950s, West Side Story being probably the most famous example. Diana’s model was a Basque beauty known as Mrs Cohen and again was cast by Gerald at Kinkell after learning the skill of lost wax bronze casting from the past master George Mancini. Plumbed for water this fountain will spout forth from the mouths of four fish embedded in the base.
