Diana Hill (nee Dietz), 1785 A young child holding a peach towards her mouth, she stands beside a basket of grapes and peaches Signed with initials and dated 1785, (restorations to background)set in rose coloured gilt frame.

Hill was a pupil of Jeremiah Meyer and exhibited three paintings at the Royal Academy the year that this miniature was taken. It was in this year that it is thought that her husband died for she applied for permission to go to India where she had a brother-in-law in the Company’s service in Calcutta. Permission was granted in September of this year. Humphry a contemporary miniaturist already in India remarked that he would rather have had all the male painters in England landed in Bengal than a single woman. He went on to remark that she was powerfully recommended to the leading people.
