DISMANTLING THE OLD HULK
1822 -1878 signed
Oil on canvas 18 x 14 inches
Framed size 26 ¼ x 22 ¼ inches
John Callow was born in London in 1822. He was a pupil of his brother William, who took the young John to Pairs in 1835 where he studied and ultimately took over the drawing practice, returning to England in 1844. John was elected Associate of the New Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1845, but resigned in 1848 and joined the ‘Old’ Society of Painters in Watercolours the following year.
From 1855 to 1861 he was Professor of drawing at the
R.M.A. Addiscombe, after which he became joint master of Landscape Drawing with A.E. Penley at the RMA Woolwich. In 1875 he was appointed Professor at Queens College London and managed to keep up the large and profitable private practice.
His style is largely based on that of his brother, and he excelled in coastal scenes. His subjects were taken from the coasts of England, Wales, Normandy and the Channel Islands. He also painted landscapes in North Wales from 1861, Scotland from 1862 and the Lakes from 1864. Callow occasionally painted in oil. Like his brother, he was a firm believer in the use of pure watercolour rather than heightening with bodycolour.
His executors held sales of his drawings at Christies on 24 June and 18 December 1878 & April 7 1879.
Examples of work: British Museum; Victoria & Albert Museum; Glasgow Art Gallery; Gray Art Gallery Hartlepool; Leeds City Art Gallery; Newport Art Gallery; York City Art Gallery and more.
John Callow published a book with R.P. Leitch called Easy Studies in Watercolour painting, 1881
