A most attractive and very unusual early 19th Century mahogany Stick Barometer in essentially original condition. The striking gadrooned pediment over finely detailed engraved silvered brass register plate, signed by the makers and bearing mercury Fahrenheit and Réaumur thermometer and rack-and-pinion operated vernier. The trunk of well-patinated ‘flame’ mahogany, edge-moulded and concealing barometer tube, terminating within mahogany, urn-shaped cistern cover.

Perhaps the most renowned barometer makers, the firm was founded in the mid-18th Century by Peter Dollond, an immigrant Huguenot from France [who became Instrument Maker and Optician to Kings George II and III] and flourished until its acquisition by Aitchison in 1913.
