High quality and very unusual early 19th Century bow-front mahogany Marine Stick Barometer, in essentially original condition; the ‘ogee’ pediment over well-engraved, silvered brass register plates, signed by the maker, with manually-operated vernier and protected by hinged door bearing Fahrenheit mercury thermometer. The solid mahogany trunk, containing restricted diameter marine cistern tube, terminating within turned brass 3-section cistern cover. The barometer is mounted on replaced gimbals. Hand-made screws throughout.

Perhaps the most renowned of barometer makers, the firm of Dollond was founded in the mid 18th Century by Huguenot Peter Dollond [who became Instrument Maker and Optician to Kings George II & III] and which continued to flourish into the 20th Century. It was acquired by Aitchison in 1913.
