With Decorative Shaped and Pierced Splat and Crinoline Stretcher
Solid Yew Wood and Elm
Seat Height 17.25"
A classic double bow highback Windsor armchair made from solid yew and elm. The high arched bentwood back encloses three turned yew wood spindles flanking the central decorative splat and is socketed into the bentwood arm bow. This in turn is supported by the lower part of the decorative splat, flanked on each side by seven turned yew spindles and a boldly turned solid yew arm rest support, all socketed into a single plank saddled solid elm seat, which in turn is raised on four well turned lags joined by a crinoline stretcher. The Windsor chair making tradition flourished in the early C19th and the finest quality examples were constructed largely from yew wood. This chair has excellent detailing to the splat and has a fine crinoline stretcher and has developed an attractive honey colour and genuinely well Patinated surface. It is very strong, functional and comfortable, as well as having the classic understated good looks common to the genre.
