Frank Henry Mason was born in Seaton Carew, Co.Durham. He was educated on the training ship Conway and went to sea, later becoming an engineer in the shipbuilding industry at Leeds and Hartlepool. He then took up marine painting, mainly in watercolour. During the First World War he served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve as a lieutenant. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1900, and was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists. He was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1929. In 1973 an exhibition of his work was held at Greenwich.
