Lady Honoria was the daughter of the Third Earl of Cadogan, a career admiral who succeeded unexpectedly in 1832, five half brothers and an intervening full brother having died previously, all without issue. This accomplished watercolour conveys atmosphere and personality with great dexterity, evoking the mid-nineteenth century interior and an intense life of wide ranging interests. An influx of possessions seems crammed into not so much a scheme, as an assembly of clutter, particularly redolent of the Victorian age. What can the rest of the house contained? Heavy curtains and a draped alcove further exclude light from the vast bow window to create a Dickensian atmosphere, objects and paintings gleam in the twilight.
