DUCK SHOOTING

AFTER GEORGE MORLAND

Circa 1800
Oil on glass 13 ¼ x 17 ¾ inches
Framed size 14 ¾ x 19 ¼ inches

This is an exceptionally fine example of a “Reversed Glass” painting.
Most art dealers do not normally buy these as they mainly fall in the ‘decorative arts’ category.
I have seen many glass paintings over the years but none finer than this one, which is also in lovely condition.
The subject is taken from a painting and engraving by George Morland.
This technique of painting on the back of a piece of glass is very hard to make it look realistic because you have to paint everything the wrong way round. The last thing you paint in a normal canvas painting, like the details and the highlights are the first thing you have to paint on and then the background colours are the last.
This technique of reverse glass painting was most often produced in China in the 18th and 19th Centuries.
