Listing Information
A magnificent early 19th century mahogany Kentian revival Eagle side table. A carved spread eagle sitting on rockwork and mounted on a gadrooned plinth supporting a frieze with carved egg and dart moulded panels above a laurel leaf moulding and central tablet incorporating the Cavendish crest.
A coiled serpent forms the apex of the Cavendish crest and this table may have a connection to a part of the family whose London home ,Devonshire house Piccadilly was created by the architect and designer Wiliiam Kent. Kent is thought to of been a direct influence on the early 19th century designers and his employment of the animal form can be found on many examples of important Regency furniture.
Original Throughout
Research has revealed two depictions of the Cavendish Arms which may have been used by the Dukes of Devonshire and Newcastle during the 17th and 18th centuries.
A suite of three Eagle tables commissioned by Lord Onslow for Clandon Park and supplied by Gillows are almost identical in design and construction.
