A sampler, beautifully worked in bright colours by Mary Ann Crooks in the first quarter of the 19th century, with the unusual feature of the date having been removed at a later time, presumably by Mary Ann herself, in order to conceal her age (therefore "vanity sampler").

The sampler is finely worked with plants and flowers in an array of vases and urns, plus crowns, birds and insects, and two shepherds with goats alongside, and two tiny dogs, all within a running border of flowers and foliage.

The colour is bright and unfaded; some wear to backing fabric.
