Early 19th century Regency period mahogany antique dining table. We are very fortunate to have this table in stock. It has the original leaves and leaf carrier, the legs are a really fine Regency design and the timber is a very dense grained Cuban mahogany. The legs are turned, reeded and tapered in the manner of the Imperial design patented by Gillows. As usual, this table stands on brass caps and casters. The mechanism is extremely well made and is both strong and slides well too. The table separates into two console tables which means that it can be stored against a wall if required for a buffet or dinner dance and also makes it very easy to carry from room to room or outside for a garden party. The other advantage of this mechanism is that it allows for the table to be extended beyond the original length without modification to the original construction. Please ask for details if a longer table is required. As it stands at the moment, this table can be extended from almost any length from 57½" minimum to 177" long using six removable leaves and mechanism of sliding bearers.
This is a very flexible, strong and useful table dating from the pre-Victorian period, a time when furniture was hand made to order and drawn along elegant classic lines.

James Winter was an important furniture dealer, broker and licensed appraiser based in Soho, London between 1823 and 1840. However the company that he founded is recorded as having traded in second hand furniture until its demise in 1870, probably long after Winter's death. In the course of its history, the business was renamed 'James Winter & Sons' and even re-located a couple of times, albeit always remaining on Wardour Street, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, 1660-1840, ed. by G. Beard and C. Gilbert, pp 992-3.
