This is an early pre hallmark English verge from 1690 The watch was made by John White, a listed maker who was apprenticed in 1684 and admitted to the Clockmakers Company circa 1692 The watch has been cleaned and serviced and keeps time to around 30 minutes in 24 hours. Movement – the large gilt full plate verge movement has large Egyptian style pillars and an oversized watch cock, which is decorated with fine piercing and also which features a finely engraved cherubs face on the base. The watch cock also has a large D shaped foot. The movement is signed “Jn White, London” and is in 95% mint condition – small scratches on the plate pins

Inner case – the movement comes in an English silver inner case, which has a hinged bezel and case maker's marks for WB. The watch is wound from the back, set from the front and the movement swings out from the front also. The case has a replaced later stem and bow. The case has a smooth plain finish and is in 90% mint condition – a light groove from the outer and the replaced bow and stem Outer case – the original and matching outer case also has a smooth plain finish and is in 90% mint condition – the lightest of marks only, overall in exceptional condition for its age

Dial – the original silver champlevé dial has a recessed centre signed “Jn White, London” and which is decorated with cherubs, similar to that on the watch cock. The dial is in 90% mint condition – the enamel is lacking on the numbers but still a good example The watch has a massive bulls eye mineral glass
