Hand Carved and Painted Wood

A finely executed and rare bas relief profile portrait of a prominent military figure, depicted in uniform and retaining original polychrome decoration. Deeply carved from a single block of wood and retaining its original frame this early campaign work is signed and dated to verso. The detail and quality of carving define this as an exceptional and significant piece of Folk Art Sculpture.
We are not accustomed to dealing in firearms, but this rifle has so much about it, that I couldn't resist it. The stock is wonderfully shaped and well worn, it has a wonderful rich plummy colour and is Patinated like a wonderful piece of early treen. The metalwork is slightly oxidised and bears a slightly pitted surface, commensurate with its age. There is a lovely collection of early firearms on the walls of the great hall in Cothele House, now a National Trust Property situated above the River Tamar on the on the boarder of Devon and Cornwall, which we have always admired for their form and patination. I think that this is now perfect to hang over a broad inglenook fireplace or in a country kitchen as it is somehow atmospheric and stylish and has a reassuring nostalgia about it. It is not as a firearm that it is appealing but more as an object with a unique and individual history, something that was handled and cared for many years ago.
