A pair of rosewood adjustable bookends by EDMUND NYE (c.1840-1863), inlaid with mosaic designs by Thomas Barton of the Vanessa Juliana butterfly to one flap and a view of Bayham Abbey Ruin to the other. At The Great Exhibition of 1851 Tunbridge ware was represented by three manufacturers, Edmund Nye, Robert Russell and Henry Hollamby. Nye exhibited four pieces, two tables, a workbox with a view of Bayham Abbey Ruins and a bookstand, both ends with the butterfly design. This present book rack uses both of the Thomas Barton designs in the one piece.
Barton was perhaps the finest of the nineteenth century Tunbridge ware makers, working for many years as Nye's designer before taking over the business himself in 1863.
