Attractive 19th Century mahogany Marine Stick Barometer; the pagoda-style pediment over ivory register plates, signed by the maker, with rack-and-pinion operated vernier and protected by glass cover. The slender trunk of well patinated mahogany, with inset Fahrenheit thermometer in unusual Gothic arched frame. The concealed barometer tube terminating in original cylindrical brass cistern cover. The whole mounted on replaced gimbals.

Melling was a noted marine instrument maker and retailer, operating from premises at 12 South Castle St. Liverpool, initially in partnership with George Payne, from 1830 to 1851.
